MWF wins Audience Choice
Award -
Africa World Documentary Film Fest
The Africa World Documentary
Film Festival has recently named 'I'm Not Black, I'm Coloured' as
the Audience Choice Award Winner for 2010. The film was screened at the
Bermuda International Film Festival and Barbados Film Festival.
Initially 160 films were submitted from around the globe to the
festival of which they narrowed to 50 films that would
actually screen. Of those 50 films I'm Not Black, I'm Coloured
was an audience favorite.
Producer/Director Kiersten
Chace and cinematographer William Diedericks were in attendance
at the Bermuda Int'l Film Festival where their film played to a
near full house audience. After the screening the audience
engaged in 45 minutes of Q&A and ultimately had to take the
conversation out into the lobby as there were so many questions.
Several audience members emotionally suggested that Bermuda
needs a film like this for their mixed race people who also are
a product of colonization and slavery centuries ago. One young
woman stated that the film inspired her to produce a film about
her islands history.
We want to thank Niyi Coker, Jr. and his staff for their
continued support of African Documentary films. |

Spartacus Actress Lesley
Ann Brandt
Endorses and Supports I'm Not Black, I'm Coloured
At the beginning of May,
Producer/Director Kiersten Chace was invited to Los Angeles to
meet with actress Lesley Ann Brandt to discuss her future role
in promoting the film I'm Not Black, I'm Coloured.
Lesley Ann is best known for her current role as Naevia (along
side Lucy Lawless) in the cable TV series Spartacus: Blood
and Sand which has been recently picked up by Lionsgate for
a 2nd and 3rd season.
Lesley Ann was born and raised in Cape Town South Africa (now
living in New Zealand). She has recently made an official press
statement that she is proud to be a Cape Coloured and discussed
her mixed race heritage. Lesley writes "I
fall into the "Coloured" category and like every South African,
was issued an ID number at birth. The last two numbers in that
ID number would identify me as Coloured". Lesley is
one of the first actresses to formally make this statement and
has resulted in a flood of emails and support from Coloured
women and men across South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The film I'm Not Black, I'm Coloured was brought to her
attention by a fan who had seen the film and Lesley Ann reached
out immediately to Kiersten Chace to obtain a copy of the DVD.
She loved the film and was surprised that anyone could pull off
such a complex story. After viewing the film, the actress
invited Chace to Los Angeles to discuss future opportunities to
speak at film screenings and a possible lead role in a indie
feature film which is in the midst of being written at this
time.

Tami Tushie's Toys - IDC
Finalist - Hot Docs Toronto
Producer Kiersten Chace along
side her Minnesota DocuClub members created a short film
Tami Tushie's Toys (TTT) that was named as
a finalist in the International Documentary Film Challenge. Out
of 120 teams worldwide only 12 films were chosen as finalist.
This challenge requires filmmaking teams to produce an 8 minute
documentary film in only 'five' days time. That may sound easy
but what if you didn't know your genre or theme until the first
day of filming? Yes, it adds a whole new twist to filmmaking.
On Thursday March 4th, all teams worldwide were given a genre,
for example ours was 'Character Study', and were given a theme
of 'Dreams/Nightmares'. Then of course over the next five days
you must shoot, edit and deliver an 8 minute film by midnight
March 8th. All 16 members of our team pitched in and created a
superior product.
Director Melody Gilbert, Producer Kiersten Chace, and Associate
Producer Amira Cohen traveled to Toronto to participate in the
Hot Docs screenings of the IDC finalists. While TTT was not a
winner we were extremely proud of our short film and is a great
contender to win the Audience Choice award and YOU CAN HELP...

TTT was also screened at the 2010 Minneapolis/St. Paul
International Film Festival. |

Solveig
In 2008
Producer/Director Kiersten Chace was invited to an Indigenous
Peoples Conference in Bodo, Norway to screen her film I'm Not
Black, I'm Coloured. During this visit she traveled three hours
north into Sapmi land and met with Sami leaders along with
several South African leaders. During the visit Chace realized
how similar the history and plight of the Sami people is to the
Cape Coloured people of South Africa.
Since that visit Chace has held a strong desire to produce a
film that would feature Sami elders in order to capture their
stories. The time has come.
During a Q&A session at a local Twin Cities church screening one of the
elders asked if Chace had ever heard of the term 'Black
Norwegian'. Unaware of this term, Chace contacted her friend in
Drag, Norway to ask if he had heard of the term. He too was
unaware of the term and referred me to the editor of Baiki
magazine, Faith Fjeld in Duluth who then introduced Chace to artist Solveig Arneng (Sally Johnson) in Duluth. Sally is of Sami
descent and has been painting since the 1940's. She has
agreed to let MWF share her heart felt and beautifully stirring stories. We are honored and
thrilled to document her life and her art. And by the way a 'black norwegian' is an American term for a person of Sami descent and
is a somewhat derogatory term.
This film is the first in a series of life stories under the
hood of Lineage Films, LLC. |

McGrath)
... an engaging, informative and emotional examination of the
legacy of Apartheid in South Africa from the viewpoint of the
Cape Coloured, the majority population in Cape Town.
...the documentary includes emotive interviews, while narration
is informative, catering to a mass audience. |

Tollund Tours Features I'm Not Black, I'm Coloured With the assistance of Producer
Kiersten Chace, Janet Tollund owner of Group Tour Directors has
included a special visit to Dr. Michael Adams church in Atlantis
on her 2010 South Africa tour. Dr. Adams was a key character in
the film and is thrilled that a tour company is actually
including stops into Coloured townships. This rarely happens in
Cape Town.
To help promote her tour Tollund had a special screening at the
home of Jean and Dale Berry. Guests were thoroughly engaged in
the film and asked many questions afterwards. We want to thank
GTD and Tollund Tours in furthering the effort to educate
Americans about the Cape Coloured people.
